  • Weight: The weight of adult pandas can reach as much as 125kg/275lb, (70kg/155lb for wild pandas) while new born babies are only 100g on average and the smallest is only around 50g.

  • Size: Adult pandas are generally 70cm/2.3ft tall, 120cm/3.95ft long while newborns are as small as the newborn mice.

  • Diet: 99% of giant pandas' diet is bamboo and the other 1% is animal carcasses and other plants for wild pandas, fruits and formula feeds for pandas in captivity.

  • Life Span: 20 for wild pandas and the oldest giant pandas in captivity has reached 37.

  • Number: There are in total 2,000-3,000 in total including wild pandas.

  • Reproduction: Giant pandas have one baby every 2 years due to their ovulation once a year.

Where can I see giant pandas?

Chengdu is the best place to see pandas with Chengdu Giant Panda Research and Breeding Center at the outskirt of the city about 40 minutes drive away, Dujiangyan Panda Base 1.5 hours drive away and Wolong Nature Reserve 3 hours drive away. You can either work with adorable pandas as a Panda Keeper, take a photo with a giant panda or trace wild pandas.

What's the best time to see pandas?

Pandas do not hibernate so they can be visited at any time of the year. They are more active in the morning during 8:30-10:30 when they eat and play out in their outter enclosure. Newborns can be seen at a greater chance from August to October during their breeding period.

Can I hold a panda for photos?

No, not any more. Holding a panda is no longer available in any Panda Bases in China. Now the best interaction chance with cuddly panda bears is to attend the Panda Volunteer Program and be a Panda Keeper.

How do I apply to work as a panda keeper?

Please share your idea of working as a panda keeper with your travel specialist and he/she will handle the next procedures. You will be given a health examination form as your health examination record has to be provided for application of a panda keeper.

Can my child be a panda keeper?

Yes. The age limit for application of the program is 12-65 years old. You could bring your kids between 2-11 years old and your guide will help take care of them during the program.

Where can I work as a panda keeper?

The Panda Keeper Program is currently available in 3 Panda Bases including Dujiangyan Panda Base, Wolong Panda Base and Bifengxia Panda Base.
