Beijing Daxing International Airport Opens with World's Biggest Terminal

On September 25, 2019, Chinese President Xi Jinping inaugurated Beijing Daxing International Airport ahead of celebrations of the country's 70th anniversary. Located on the border of Beijing and Langfang, Hebei Province, it is Beijing's second international mega-hub airport with the world's largest single-structure terminal covering an area of more than 11 million square feet.
The first commercial flight of Daxing International Airport from China Southern Airlines officially took off in the afternoon, which was bound for Guangdong. And then there were 6 more flights leaving for Shanghai and other destinations. It is claimed that Daxing will connect to more than 100 global destinations by 2020 and become a new gateway to the country.

The whole project takes about 5 years to complete, and it is estimated that about 120 billion yuan ($17 billion) was invested in the construction. Daxing Airport is expected to accommodate 72 million passengers a year by 2025, and 100 million passengers annually by the next decade.
The huge starfish-shaped Daxing Airport has five outstretched piers, which are designed to shorten the distance between check-in and the boarding gates so that the passengers will walk no more than 2,000 feet to board the plane.
About 30 miles south of Beijing, Daxing is easily connected to downtown with fast metro lines and high-speed railways. Besides, the newly opened airport was outfitted with fast food chains, cafe, tea lounges and many upscale retail stores of international designer labels.
