Shanghai Plans to Extend Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street All the Way to the Bund!

In September 2019, Shanghai is going to extend Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street all the way east to the Bund, based on an official announcement on the 20th anniversary of Nanjing Road's opening up.
The extension project will firstly start from the section between Middle Henan Road and Middle Sichuan Road, and now some of the current public bus routes have been rechanneled. An elite global design team is invited to optimize the layout of the extensional street, while the actual construction would be carried out around the 2020 New Year.

Firstly established in 1851, Nanjing Road was transformed into a prosperous commercial street in 1999. Through 20 years of development, now Nanjing Road has become one of the busiest and largest shopping streets in the world that could parallel Avenue des Champs-Elysees. It is a shopping paradise housing an array of department stores, international high-end designer shops and time-honored Shanghai local brands, where tourists are offered a dazzling variety of goods from every corner of the globe.
Currently, many extant stores and malls are undertaking renovations and get ready to reopen in the coming months. Once Nanjing Road gets a makeover to the Bund, the soul of Shanghai, the commercial street will see more designer shops and flagship stores, and of course more crowds of tourists and shoppers.
It is said that the dang-dang tram bus on Nanjing Road would be still retained as a special vintage flavor of Shanghai. The upcoming extension work will not affect tourist's shopping experience, and one could still access to Nanjing Road by subway line 2 and line 10.
