Potala Palace Needs Reservation for Entry Now

Travelers wishing to visit the UNESCO-listed Potala Palace are required to make the reservation for entry ticket at least one day in advance starting from July 21, 2019.
Tibet has seen a great tourism boom in recent years. From January to June in 2019, Tibet has received more than 110,000 foreign tourists. Potala Palace, as the most iconic attraction in Tibet Autonomous Region, usually sees big crowds at the ticket windows during the travel peak season from May to October. The purpose of the new reservation rule is to ease the pain of huge crowds and also to ensure the sustainable protection of the Potala Palace.

Tourists can book the tickets through the official website of Potala, and the reservations are available up to 7 days in advance. The other alternative is to reserve the ticket on day in advance at the ticket window.
However, the newly adopted reservation method would barely affect foreign visitors' sightseeing, since non-Chinese tourists can only tour Tibet with organized tours and your travel guide will accommodate the ticket reservation for you.
