Xi'an-Chengdu High-Speed Railway Opened up in 2017

On December 6, 2017, the first MU train thunders out a station from Xi'an, starting its 658-kilometer journey towards Chengdu at a design speed of 250km/h. This means the Xi'an-Chengdu High-Speed Railway is opened up. The bullet train will ride about 4 hours to reach the destination, much shorter than the previous 11 hours. It takes a crew of about 80,000 people and over 5 years to complete the project.
The 4G signal-covered railway unwinds through the Guanzhong Plain, Qinling Mountains, Hanzhong Plain and Ta-pa Mountains to Sichuan Basin. "We need to overcome particularly complex geological conditions in most areas, especially those abounding with mountains", says Wang Zhenbo, one of the senior commanders responsible for the project. To shorten the travel route through the Qinling Mountains, we designed a 25‰ gradient for the railway, meaning the train would ascend 25 meters per 1,000-meter-travel. And the steady slopes stretch up to about 46 kilometers. This is literally a breakthrough, he adds.

Besides, the railway is designed with the consideration of environmental protection. The construction authority added cost to bore tunnels, build viaducts and put up special protective screenings, in order to not to damage or disturb the natural reserves, tourist attractions, wild fauna and flora, etc.
In the first weekend (December 8 - 10) after operation, the railway handled an average of over 8,000 passengers daily from Chengdu, Chongqing to Xi'an. As one of the vital transport corridors from north to southwest China, the railway is expected to help promote the economic exchange and development in these areas.
The operation is also a good news for tourists, for it will be easier for them to visit the countless scenic spots along the way, such as Terra-Cotta Warriors, Wuhou Tomb, Chengdu Panda Base, Jinli Ancient Street, etc.
