Jiuzhaigou Closed due to Earthquake





At 21:19, on August 8th, 2017, a 7.0 earthquake occurs in Jiuzhaigou county, Sichuan province, wreaking havoc on the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historical Interest Area (hereafter Jiuzhaigou), according to the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area Administration. In consider of the safety of tourists, the authority closed Jiuzhaigou from August 9th.
A detection from the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) shows that the earthquake occurred at 66 degrees north latitude and 103.82 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 20 kilometers.
When Jiuzhaigou was caught in the disaster, it was crowded with tourists. In first time, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) assigned emergency measures to evacuate and pacify them. In response to the orders from the authority, travel agencies, hotels and online travel companies tried their utmost to check if anyone was injured, missing or dead, helped them and promised to refund the money to those who had yet to begin their tour in the scenic area. Today, no casualties have been reported.
Praised as a "fairy tale world", Jiuzhaigou is a World Natural Heritage abounding with lakes, ravines, forests, rare plants and animals, Tibetan villages, palaeontological fossils and fossil glacial landforms. In 2016, the scenic spot was visited by 5 million times, generating a revenue of CNY 805 million.
